Wadowice tour from Krakow
Wadowice is the birthplace of Karol Wojtyla – Pope John Paul II – who died in 2005r. It was there that he spent his childhood and attended school. The most important monument in Wadowice is the Basilica of Our Lady, the construction of which began in the 15th century. The presbytery was built; at the end of the 18th century, the Late Baroque nave and aisles together with the tower were added, and in the 19th century chapels were completed. At the end of the 19th century, the front tower and the facade were thoroughly rebuilt according to a design by Tomasz Prylinski. Close to the basilica, at ul. Koscielna 7, stands the house where Emilia and Karol Wojtyla lived and it was here that on May 18th 1920r. their younger son Karol Jozef Wojtyla, who was to become the Holy Father John Paul II, was born. After he was elected Pope, the family house where he had lived for 18 years was transformed into a museum. It opened in 1084 on the Pope`s 64th birthday.
